Key information about how to identify asbestos, the dangers of asbestos contamination and how to get rid of ACMs

What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a natural material consisting of many small fibres that are strong, durable and resistant to heat, fire and many chemicals. This made it a seemingly attractive material for a range of building materials including cladding, roofing, downpipes, ceilings, walls and insulation. It was imported into New Zealand and widely used in the building industry until the mid 1980s when it became known that asbestos poses a serious health risk when the asbestos fibres are released into the air. To this day, many homes, and industrial and commercial buildings still have asbestos materials within them.
Are there different types of asbestos?
Yes, there are two main types of asbestos – friable and non-friable. Friable asbestos is in a powder form. This makes it especially prone to become airborne and able to be breathed in. Non-friable is a bonded form of asbestos, such as cement sheets for cladding. This means it is not easily reduced to a powder form. The team at Asbestos Contracting are certified to remove both categories of asbestos.
What are the health risks of asbestos?
Asbestos becomes a health risk when airborne asbestos fibres are inhaled. These fibres can become embedded in your lungs, which can result in four main diseases â€“ cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis and pleural plaques. Risk factors that influence the severity of an illness linked to asbestos depend on the following:
  • Length of time a person is exposed to asbestos
  • Amount of asbestos a person is exposed to
  • Presence of other lung conditions, for instance, smokers have a higher risk of developing an asbestos related illness
Does an asbestos roof contaminate tank water?
Yes, an asbestos roof will contaminate your tank water. You should not drink water from collected from an asbestos roof under any circumstances.
